The real surprise guest of the 2016 Kia Super Bowl commercial? A colorful sock!
Christoper Walken is old news. We’d already heard that he would be starring in Kia’s Super Bowl 50 ad. But the latest news about his guest star - a sock - has us curious, to say the least.
We all have a pair of them hidden somewhere in the depths of our dressers — colorful socks that we’re too embarrassed to wear. Socks, neglectfully shoved to the nether corners of our drawers, that are just waiting to see the light of day.
Good news for socks!
If Kia’s new teaser Tweet can be trusted, then this year, in honor of Super Bowl 50, Christopher Walken is giving at least one lucky sock some much overdue attention. The colorful sock will star alongside him in Kia’s 60-second Super Bowl 50 ad. Of course, the commercial will also play tribute to the brand’s new Optima along the way.

Walken has been the voice for several new Kia commercials, but we’ll see him live and in person during the automaker’s Game Day ad.
Here’s one of Kia’s recent ads, “Middle C,” narrated by Walken.
What else does Kia have under the hood?
Joining the ad race in its 7th consecutive year with these auto companies (and more), Kia’s spot in the Super Bowl was created to “shine a light on the Optima as a ‘vibrant alternative’ for drivers determined to stand out or get in the zone.” The sock, apparently, is meant to give the ad a colorful and memorable edge to their message.
The brains behind the Kia Super Bowl 50 commercial is ad agency David and Goliath and according to COO & EVP of Kia Motors America, Michael Sprague, it’s meant to make people “discover the exciting new Kia and question everything they know about the brand.”
The Goal: Stand out and be distinctive
Sprague followed that statement by highlighting the quality and styling of Kia’s new Optima and saying that the ad features Christopher Walken because of the actor’s ability to stand out and be distinctive. (We’re sure they’ll be distinctive with that sock they’re bringing into the picture)
Kia’s 60 previous seconds of Game-time, airtime fame will be divided into two 30-second commercials that will be shown during the third quarter of CBS’s broadcast of Super Bowl 2016 on February 7, 2016. Though there’s not so much word about the ad’s creative details, from what we know so far, it will be far different from the Kia Super Bowl XLIX commercial which featured Pierce Brosnan.
Kia’s Super Bowl 50 announcement has made us antsy to see what the Walken and sock duo have in store, and is definitely worth adding to our list of 35 reasons we love the Super Bowl.
