Cardinals And Patriots Are Vegas Front Runners To Meet In Super Bowl 50

The curtain went down on the 2015 NFL regular season and we’re all set for the real thing: Super Bowl commercials. Just kidding (not really): The playoffs.

The final spots in the 2016 NFL Playoffs are no longer up for grabs. The journey to Super Bowl 50 in Levi’s Stadium on February 7th will start this Saturday with the Wild Card games, when the Houston Texans (9-7) will host the Kansas City Chiefs (11-5) and the Cincinnati Bengals (12-4) will play at home against their fierce rivals from Pittsburgh (10-6). Sunday is also packed with Wild Card action, as the last year finalists from Seattle (10-6) will play in frozen Minnesota (11-5). Green Bay (10-6), who lost to the Vikings in a position battle yesterday (13-20), will visit DC and play the NFC East division winners, the Washington Redskins (9-7). Denver (12-4) finished strong with a W against San Diego and secured their AFC Bye week alongside the declining Patriots (12-4). In the NFC, Arizona (13-3) and the almost perfect Carolina Panthers (15-1) will enjoy a week off until the Divisional Round.

Get Your Wallets Ready

With less than a week to the opening of playoff season, football fans across the globe are getting their wallets out to put some money on the team they believe will be crowned World Champions in Santa Clara. After a fairly decisive slate of games in Week 17, the odds are settled for the teams that will be competing throughout the next month to win Super Bowl 50. The latest VegasInsider odds were posted and shaped up to look like this:

Surprise, Surprise

Right up there are the Arizona Cardinals. Most NFL fans will probably admit that they didn’t even expect the Cardinals to reach the playoffs, yet having won nine straight (until yesterday’s defeat), the team, led by veteran QB Carson Palmer, has shown that they are the real deal. With an offense full of dangerous play-makers and one of the league’s most consistent defenses, Arizona presents a scary match-up for any team that must face them in January or February. The odds: 3/1.

Who Bets Against The Brady-Belichick Duo?

Until recently the New England Patriots were leading the way at 7/2, but their recent slump (four losses in their last six games) settled them just a smidgen after the Cardinals. And that might be exactly what the reigning champs had wanted. Quarterback Tom Brady has appeared as determined as ever this season in the wake of a near suspension resulting from last year’s “Deflategate” controversy. It’s hard to bet against this guy and a Bill Belichick-coached team that, at times, has looked as good as any he has put out on the field. The Patriots still offer a decent payout for the safest of betters with 16-5.

The (Almost) Undefeated Panthers

Behind these two front-runners lie the Carolina Panthers and let’s not forget that they were undefeated up until last weekend. While a loss to the reeling Falcons may have raised some doubts, MVP candidate Cam Newton knows how to put points on the board and the defense, led by linebacker Luke Kuechly and cornerback Josh Norman, is as good as any. At 6/1, the return on this bet is pretty favorable considering this is a team most have slotted as favorites to win.

Legion Of Boom (or Bust)

It is interesting to note that the Seahawks come in at 8/1 given their 10-6 record. With an impressive win in Arizona last night, they could very well be the team with the best momentum in the NFC (8 wins in the 10 games since their loss to Carolina). Perhaps the oddsmakers at Vegas are keeping the 2011 New York Giants in mind; they pulled off an upset over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI despite posting a 9-7 mark in the regular season. More than likely, however, they are noting the impressive second half these Seahawks have put together with Russell Wilson, a proven winner, at the helm. Let’s hope for the Legion of Boom fans that the upcoming post season run won’t be as heart breaking as the last one.

All In On The Broncos Defense

The Denver Broncos, boasting arguably the league’s best defensive unit, come in at 10/1 amidst Peyton Manning’s foot injury and the resulting question mark under center. Manning’s return in the second half of Sunday’s game against the Chargers ignited theBroncos to 20 second half points and a victory, so it will be interesting to see if he gets the nod from head coach Gary Kubiak in the playoffs. Meanwhile, their AFC West rivals from Kansas City have won ten in a row and were close to taking the division crown. The Chiefs won’t open the playoffs with a home game, where they are 6-2 on the season, and their 14/1 odds from last week took a dive and now stand at 20/1.

Will Big Ben Wake Up Just In Time?

The Pittsburgh Steelers, with a shocking loss to the Ravens last Sunday, demolished the Browns yesterday (28-12) and benefited from the Jets’ loss to secure their Wild Card spot. After they made the cut, no one would blame you for placing your faith in head coach Mike Tomlin and quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, who together brought the Lombardi Trophy back to Pittsburgh in 2009. The odds: 14/1.

Hail Mary Bet: The Packers

The Packers, though assured a playoff spot, are no sure thing either for the Big Game. A 6-0 start has since turned into a roller coaster ride of a season and the defeat in Minnesota last night cost them their NFC North title. They won’t play at Lambeau Field again this year, but will play against the vulnerable Redskins. QB Aaron Rodgers has looked slightly more human than we’ve come to expect this season (except with this crazy hail mary against the Lions), but he’s delivered one championship already and is certainly due for another one. Bottom line? 20/1.

The Bengals Or The Chokers?

The Cincinnati Bengals are posted at 25/1, after missing a chance to clinch a first round bye in the AFC. The Bengals defense has allowed the least points in the league and Andy Dalton seems primed to show us that he is one of football’s finest signal callers. (It also helps to have A.J. Green catching everything thrown his way.) Just a small reminder: Since Dalton was drafted by the Bengals in 2011, Cinci played in the Wild Card round every post-season. They were eliminated in all 4 seasons. Ouch…

Run Adrian, Run

As mentioned previously, the Minnesota Vikings have won their division and roll into the playoffs on a three game winning streak. Still, Vegas has them at just 40/1 odds of winning Super Bowl 50, with their stout defense not being enough to overcome the unproven ability of Teddy Bridgewater at quarterback. You can bet though, that All-Pro running back Adrian Peterson will be working as hard as ever to win the championship he deserves. And you don’t want to stand in his way…

Houston & Washington Also In The Mix. Kind Of.

Not to be forgotten are the Washington Redskins and the Houston Texans. Despite both possessing fairly average records, these two teams are headed to the playoffs as division winners and will get a home game in the Wild Card round. Despite this, both squads have a lot of question marks on either side of the ball and their odds are low at 60/1 and 70/1, respectively. But hey, we’ve seen crazier things happen in the past, and we definitely caught this textbook surfing move by the Texans defensive end, J. J. Watt.
