Pop star legend, David Bowie, passed away on January 10th after a long time battle with cancer.
We woke up this Monday morning to the news that hit hard. No new Super Bowl advertisers, no teasers. Just the sad, sad reality that, after an 18-month battle with cancer, British legendary pop star, David Bowie, has passed away-taking all of his music brilliance to the grave.
Just two days after his birthday, and following the release of his new and 27th album, Blackstar, Bowie surrendered to his 18-month battle with cancer.
Here’s the title track from the album:
The album was scheduled to be honored with a concert by the legendary performer at Carnegie Hall on March 31 featuring the Roots, Cyndi Lauper and the Mountain Goats.
History of a Legend
Born on January 8, 1947 in South London, Bowie was recognized across the world. His most famous hits include “Let’s Dance” and “Changes” (a song from his album “Hunky Dory,” released in 1971). The music legend was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 in recognition of his decades of contributions to the world of music.
After suffering a heart attack during a tour in Germany in 2004, Bowie’s career shifted. His final performance was in 2006, at a fundraiser for Keep a Child Alive in the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. Following that performance, he took a break from the spotlight.
A Tribute in His Honor…
Ironically, the Blackstar album was aimed to be “a welcome to longtime fans” and is another stellar example of how this music legend gave his heart and soul to his music. With the recent news, it seems this “welcome” was in fact a very sad and ironic goodbye.
Did Bowie Ever Play the Super Bowl?
Much to our disappointment, the brilliant musician never did play a Super Bowl halftime show. His music was, however, featured in this 2011 Super Bowl ad for BMW.
Bowie’s music was featured in several other advertisements as well. Here are a few of our favorites:

For all you fans with the Bowie blues — it might be just the right moment to binge listen to all those David Bowie CDs you have stacked in your room. Otherwise, it looks like we’ll just have to settle for a performance by Beyonce and Coldplay at Super Bowl 50 Halftime show.
