Although most people know America’s largest lingerie retailer by their sexy angels and scandalous lingerie, as the name suggests, Victoria’s Secret also carries a deeper (and darker) tale.
Founded by Roy Raymond, he sold the company for $1 million to Leslie Wexner, the creator of Limited Stores Inc. Raymond created the company after feeling embarrassed to purchase lingerie for his wife at traditional department stores. He wanted to establish a store where men could feel comfortable buying lingerie. The first store was in the Stanford Shopping Center in Palo Alto, California.
Since then, the company has expanded in more ways than one. In 2009, Victoria’s Secret was worth over $5 billion. Among some of the products sold are underwear, women’s clothing, lingerie, swimwear, footwear, fragrances and beauty products.
And as for Raymond … sadly he took his own life at the young age of 46. If he could only see what his business idea has transformed into…
