Airbnb arrived with a surprise Super Bowl LI commercial that was equally surprising in its content as its appearance. The online homestay network, had apparently not planned to advertise until last minute when they heard there was still ad space left. They used their 30-second buy to project one very strong message: It doesn’t matter where you come from, Airbnb is about love and acceptance.
The commercial that celebrates multiculturalism, belonging, and acceptance was put together by the three founders of Airbnb, and features mainly Airbnb employees and family members. If you enter their website, you are greeted with the message: “We believe in a world where anyone can belong.”
Airbnb’s Community Commitment Project
As well as its Super Bowl message, the ad reworked the company’s “Community Commitment” project commercial, a program that was created in response to alleged discrimination by Airbnb hosts. The socially conscious company has also made a 5-year commitment to providing short-term housing for 100,000 people in need such as refugees, victims of natural disasters and aid workers.
